This is a preliminary illustration for a picture book titled ‘When Aai Comes Home’. It’s about a little girl waiting for her Mum to come home from work, and the things they then do together.

I’m think I’m going to do the illustrations all the illustrations in scarlet.

Water-color is such fun. Less messy too.

I’ve been listening to some interesting art podcasts at the Visual Artist Podcast Network. It’s nice to listen to other artists while working, quite inspiring and very amusing in parts. It’s like being back in art college.

It’s been a rather productive day. I did a rather interesting collage over at AutumnSee, and worked on the ‘Pumpkin’ and the ‘Ancestor ‘ illustrations. Coming along quite splendidly.

I’m also peeking between work at Andrew Loomis’s ‘Creative Illustration’.

The boys in the sketches are my nephew and one of his friends.

Color Rough – The Woman and the Magic Pumpkin

Color rough for a new picture book ‘The Woman and the Magic Pumpkin’. This is an old Indian folk-tale.
The jungle to the left will be a lot denser and the grasses and the vine more well-defined. Then more work on the woman’s sari and skin.
There are 16 spreads in all, and this one is the linchpin. I’ve noticed there’s always one linchpin and once I have that in place, then it can be used as a base or guide for all the other illustrations. I’ve blocked out the others, and, so far, they look quite interesting. I hope to finish by the end of the week.

I found this old illustration while looking for some other works. This is from the ‘The Violet-Headed League’ series. I rather like this style, working directly with brush and ink, no pencil drawing beforehand. It was fun to do too.

El Delfin Rosado

This is a story about a Pink Dolphin that loses its habitat from an oil spill.
The Pink Dolphin is an endangered animal, and, to add to its habitat woes, Brazil is going to be cutting down more of the Amazon forest to build a dam.

Illustration–When I was a Monk

Rough for a new set of illustrations. I’ll be doing these in water-color, and they are going to turn out just beautiful. I HAF a strong feeling already!

Nine more roughs to go before evening, and then the coloring next week. The story is about a young boy from a poor family who is sent to study in a monastery, and what he feels about it. Hint – he doesn’t like it.

I also have a new assignment for Iguana. The roughs for that are due on the 11th. It’s a story about a pink dolphin and a Native Indian girl, and what happens to the dolphins when their environment gets polluted.

This was the first pencil rough after reading the illustration brief. I emailed it and the AD asked for the left side and the right tree part to be enlarged, and the third part to be reduced.

So I reworked on the computer and we got this.

Then I did the final rough drawing. Now it's going to be sharpened, inked and colored.

I was up late yesterday doing this. I gave the eraser a rest and inked and colored directly over the pencil lines. The colors are from a tempera set I got free with a pack of Cheddar Cheese. :D

On The River

The first pencil rough sketch for 'On the River'. The sketch is on a thin Cartridge paper sheet - it's a new, textured type that I haven't used before. I was going to ink over the sketch, but I like the pencil lines, so I'll use the light-box to transfer the sketch onto a thicker white paper. Then again, I think maybe I'll paint in acrylic instead of inking. I'm not sure right now.

Inking somehow seems like a safer way through, and I'm trying not to follow that same old path.

What I like about gardening is that you've got to keep on keeping on. Rather like the illustration business.

When I was a kid, I had this funny idea, you know, that growing up was all about reaching a point where you have everything neatly figured out. Where, so to speak, there's no need anymore for constant weeding, pruning, and planting.

Not so. Not so at all.

I bet they don't have it that easy in the Heavenly Botanical Park either.

But then I'm an atheist. :D

I've given the sequence of the way this work was done - first the pencil version, then the inked one, and then the primary and secondary coloring.

I use Staedtler and Stabilo Water-color Pencils.

This is a story about a little girl who loves stars. She overhears the grown-ups discussing a 'star rain' one night and stays up in the hope of collecting the stars as they come down.

I rather enjoyed doing the illustrations for 'Flying Freddo', although I have a VERY definite preference for tigers in the wild than tigers in circuses. So all the money I make from this book will be donated to help Project Tiger. I hope it makes some difference.
